Who is He: Spartacus is a Thracian soldier who became forced to be a gladiator at the ludus of Lentulus Batiatus because of the Roman soldier Glaber, due to a disagreement that turned into bloodshed. Originally, Glaber made a deal with Spartacus and his people to help destroy the Getaen Barbarians, who had attacked their village on many occasions, at the agreement that his people pledge loyalty to Rome. When word spreads that the Getaen Barbarians are going to attack his village, Spartacus asks Glaber to help fend them off, but is refused, and therefore Glaber and his men are attacked by Spartacus and his men. Spartacus’s wife, Sura, was also taken and put into slavery.
Originally, Spartacus’s fate was death by gladiatorial battle, but he managed to survive despite the odds not being in his favor, and was able to win over the crowd. He later becomes known as “Spartacus, the Champion of Capua” and also as “the Bringer of Rain”. Eventually, he goes on to lead a very large slave revolt like never seen before, against the Roman Republic.
Spartacus spends a good portion of the first season trying to win his wife’s freedom through battles in the arena and “the pits”. Eventually, after saving the life of Batiatus, Sura is retrieved from a Syrian slave trader and delivered to Spartacus, only to find out that she was attacked on the journey back and dies in his arms. Later on, it is revealed that Batiatus caused her death in order to force Spartacus to focus on the gladiatorial arts.
Eventually, Spartacus finds out from one of Batiatus’s henchmen that Sura’s death was no accident, and then seeks revenge, causing all the gladiators to revolt and murder all the nobles in the house as well as their masters, Batiatus and Lucretia.
Actor Information: The actor who plays the role of Spartacus is no other than Andy Whitfield. During the casting of season 2, it was discovered that Andy had the cancer known as “non-Hodgkin lymphoma”. It was treated, but complications occurred so he unfortunately had to step down from the lead role — being replaced afterwards by actor Liam McIntyre.
Andy Whitfield was born in Amlwch, Wales in 1974 and is happily married to Vashti Whitfield. Andy is renown for being not only a very cool person, but also a very nice person.
