Name: Sura
Origin: Roman
Played By: John Hannah
Who is He: Batiatus is the owner of the ludus of Lentulus Batiatus, which he inherited from his family long ago. He is an ambition, devious, greedy man who wishes to grow in status and wealth through any means necessary. While down on his luck, he saw Spartacus do battle in the arena and claimed ownership of him after he survived execution, unlike his Thracian brothers. This battle caused Spartacus to make a name for himself early on, and thus became worth more.
Batiatus’s long-term enemy / nemesis is the equally devious Solonius, who has gladiators of his own that often compete against Batiatus’s men. Solonius has his eyes on Batiatus’s wife Lucretia, which creates even more issues between the two men.
Throughout the season 1, Batiatus does many underhanded things. For example, he orders Spartacus’s wife, Sora, to be fatally wounded before being given to Spartacus, and to pretend that the driver and Sora had been attacked. This is in an effort to have Spartacus focus only on his gladiatorial battles rather than on his wife, and ends up costing Batiatus his life when Spartacus finds out. Batiatus also has the life of magistrate Calavius taken after being insulted by him when mentioning that he wanted to start to dabble in politics. However, he frames the murder on Solonius, who then is executed in the arena by Spartacus.
